Our first Great Tastes of Manitoba show of season 35 “Chicken Soup for the Soul” on Saturday, March 8 at 6:30 pm on CTV Winnipeg.
Gina Sunderland, Food & Consumer Relations Specialist RD and host Dez Daniels share two of our favourite Manitoba Chicken soup recipes, including our popular Chicken Gnocchi Soup and our comforting Chicken & Corn Chowder. This season, we’re featuring one of our most popular soups, Chicken & Navy Bean Soup as our online only recipe. We love how these flavourful soup recipes allow home cooks to quickly create, healthy, hearty soups in their own kitchens. All three recipes are family-friendly, and everyone can help to help prepare them! As a bonus we start this episode, by showing you how easy it is to make your own chicken stock.
This season we’ve continued the tradition of featuring our Manitoba farms by introducing you to some of the hard-working families who produce the food for our recipes. On this show, you’ll meet brothers Colin and Kevin Grenier, and Amy Johnston, Poultry Specialist and learn more about the importance of providing chickens with top quality feed.
There are a lot of people who play important roles in supporting farmers and their livestock. Kevin and Colin are 2nd generation chicken and grain farmers from central Manitoba. They know that quality food comes from quality feed and they work with a livestock poultry specialist, Amy Johnston, to ensure their feed ration meets the needs of their chickens at every stage of growth. Chicken feed is made up of a carefully balanced recipe of high quality, locally sourced ingredients, like wheat, corn, and soybeans, fortified with vitamins and minerals. There is a lot of cutting-edge science and technology involved in raising chickens to modern standards. Broiler chickens in Manitoba are free to roam the barn and have access to fresh feed and water 24 hours a day. Their nutritious balanced diet ensures optimal growth and is one of the reasons hormones and steroids have not been used, and are in fact banned, on Canadian chicken farms since the 1960’s.
